Welcome!
I'd like to thank you for visiting my website.
I am an Assistant Professor of modern British history at Syracuse University. Previously I taught in the freshman writing program at Princeton University.
In 2007 I completed my Ph.D. in the History Department at the University of Pennyslvania in Philadelphia, PA. My dissertation was the basis of my book Demobbed, which was published by Yale University Press in the UK in October 2009 and in the US in February 2010. Demobbed was the winner of the 2010 Longman-History Today Book of the Year Award.
I live in central New York State with my wife Barbara and our three children Thomas, Katharine, and Elizabeth. Although I've been a US resident for many years, I am a British citizen; I was born in Whiston, just outside Liverpool, and I spent many years living there as well as East Yorkshire. My sister Carolyn Conroy has just completed a Ph.D. of her own in art history and is currently working on a book about the 'forgotten' Pre-Raphaelite Simeon Solomon: her research blog is located here.
